There are phrases we know off the top of our heads, such as “when pig’s fly”, "hit it out of the park" or "It's raining cats and dogs"", these sayings are called idioms. An idiom is a widely used saying or expression that contains a figurative meaning that is different from the phrase's literal meaning. Putting Lipstick on a Pig, Skating on Thin Ice and My Dogs are Barking are the first three books in the series, Ivy's Idioms, which explains these saying. Each page contains an idiom along with it's meaning, and an example of how it is used.
During the research of this book and speaking with many educators, I discovered how difficult idioms are to learn for those individuals who are non-native English speakers, children and those who are neurodivergent. Colorfully illustrated, fun and easy to understand, it is perfect for young readers, those just learning English and people with non-typical learning styles. The idioms contained in Putting Lipstick on a Pig are borne from early Americana and agricultural settings. The second book in the series is titled Skating on Thin Ice and features sports based idioms. The recently released, My Dogs are Barking, features idioms about our favorite four-legged, best friends.
